over one and a half years in full High Definition,
we went on location throughout lower Vancouver
Island,
Montreal,
Ottawa,
and the city of Vancouver to capture this remarkable
story about the master British Columbian landscape
artist E.J. Hughes and the 4,800 hour restoration
project by renowned art conservator Cheryle A.
Harrison of the Lt.
Malaspina Sketching the Malaspina Gallery wall
mural. This heroic-sized wall mural depicting B.C.'s
Age of Discovery was covered up and hidden for
over 40 years before being rediscovered during
the demolition
of what had formerly been Nanaimo's grand honeymoon
hotel. Nanaimo is a charming harbour city
on the east coast of Vancouver Island.
Incorporating story threads of the struggle
E.J. Hughes had to
live
by his
art
and
the development of Hughes's artistic style during
his 70 year career, the documentary tells the story
of the artist who forever changed the way we view
coastal British Columbia. This is a remarkable,
poignant human story of perseverance and creativity
in the face of tragedy
and hardship. One of E.J. Hughes's masterpieces
sold at auction in November 2004 for nearly $1
million, which was a remarkable achievement for
a then living
artist. Hughes's
art is now closely held in the very protective
hands of Canada's premier public and private collectors. Canadian
